Creating the Future, Today
Art is a wonderful medium, hugely diverse and open to opinion. I think everyone has at least once seen a picture up on a wall or online, sat back and said –
“I really like that”.
For someone like myself who looks at art pretty much daily for inspiration in my graphical work. I’ve seen enough to know where my tastes lie and what I personally think makes a interesting image. However, one artist made me stop and take in more than just the visuals.
Simon Stålenhag is a talented digital artist living in Sweden who came onto the art scene in 2013. Taking inspiration from his home town and local countryside, Simon’s works capture the everyday lives of people going about their business. Sounds pretty mundane, but there’s a catch.
Every picture incorporates some form of science-fiction, from robots to spaceships and even dinosaurs. A constant feeling of curious mystery is felt as normal, familiar landscapes have alien technology plopped right in, as though its been there forever. You can’t help but create narratives in your mind and absorb not just the image, but the atmosphere created.
And that’s why Simon’s work stands out so well to me and to so many others. Atmosphere.
Masterfully blending reality and sci-fi. Simon Stålenhag has managed to create a world in his art that is similar enough to recognise, but strange enough to be curious about.
